  • What is Trucking Wellness?
A primary healthcare delivery programme dedicated to the wellness of those employed in the Road Freight and Logistics Industry.

    Background
The Trucking Wellness Programme (initially Trucking Against Aids) is managed by Corridor Empowerment Project and was launched by the Road Freight Industry in 1999 to create HIV, AIDS and STI awareness amongst long-distance truck drivers, commercial sex workers and the vulnerable communities around truck stops. The first Trucking Wellness Roadside Wellness Centre was established in Beaufort West in 2000.  These Wellness Centres exist along all major routes within the 9 provinces of South Africa.

Over the years, the focus has expanded from the mere prevention of HIV and STIs, to an integrated primary health care, with the main aim being wellness.  The first priority is still the prevention of diseases and the enhancement of healthy lifestyles.  To this end, the 22 roadside Wellness Centres are staffed by registered nurses and counsellors who provide health information and holistic primary care services to drivers, their partners, community members and commercial sex-workers.  Aimed at truck drivers and women at risk, the Wellness Centres operate mostly after normal working hours and at night.Trucking Wellness also brings wellness to the workplace through the 15 Mobile Wellness Centres providing onsite access to health screening at the workplace of industry businesses at no cost to the business.

During 2011, Trucking Wellness offered awareness/prevention education and training to 78 909 people in the sector, with 16 220 accessing voluntary HIV testing. 36 886 clients were treated at the Wellness Centres, of which 4 222 were specifically treated for STIs and more than 2 million condoms and educational materials were distributed.

    Mercedes Benz South Africa (MBSA)
MBSA has been a proud supporter of Trucking Wellness for many years.  In 2009, this support was entrenched through the formation of a long-term partnership which aims to significantly increase the work of Trucking Wellness in targeted areas.  The objective is to create a platform for encouraging a healthy lifestyle amongst commercial vehicle drivers whose skills and expertise are in short supply.  The focus is on health, safety and wellness of drivers, managers and other employees, ultimately benefitting whole communities through improved health and economic activity.
